Lesson Overview:

This Year 12 Agriculture resource* provides students with information regarding plant breeding in the forestry industry.

Students will

  • view multimedia sources and stimulus materials that outline the current methods of propagation of Radiata Pine trees.
  • engage in group work and individual tasks,
  • work towards completing an extended response question regarding a plant breeding organisation and the use of genetics in the industry.

*NOTE:  This lesson has been developed for the N.S.W BOSTES Stage 6 Agriculture Syllabus but will be applicable to use in other states.

This student workbook will allow students to: - gain an understanding of the way plantation forestry trees are bred/propagated - complete a case study on the Radiata Pine and a plant breeding organisation. - apply their prior knowledge of plant breeding techniques and agricultural examples and relate this to the forestry industry as a comparative study. - have the opportunity to analyse a range of source materials to develop their knowledge about the outcomes and the lesson culminates with an extended response question.
