Forest Education Foundation

The National Forest Learning Centre 

The National Forest Learning Centre Hobart, is a purpose built forestry learning centre which allows schools to spend an hour or two investigating various aspects of forest ecology, forest science and forest management through a range of hands‐on learning experiences developed by the Forest Education Foundation teachers.

However if you want to take a field trip the Forest Education Foundation (FEF Field Trips Along) can has a range of program and field trip opportunities available throughout Tasmania.  All field trips, from lower primary to pre-tertiary, involve a wide range of practical activities and use of specialist equipment provided by the FEF.

If you are in New South Wales

NSW Forestry Corporation

Forestry Corporation offers curriculum aligned school excursions at Cumberland and Strickland State forests.

Cumberland State Forest
A tranquil 40 hectares of eucalypt forest, lying on gently undulating land in West Pennant Hills, 20 kilometres to the north-west of Sydney. From a cleared paddock the forest has grown to become a valuable resource, providing an attractive forest destination for recreational and educational use and enjoyment. Sustainable land management issues are an important part of any school excursion. A magnificent arboretum planted with native tree species from around Australia can be found on site.

Strickland State Forest
Strickland State Forest contains an impressive diversity of plants and animals. Vegetation types range from heath to rainforest and the walking trails are suitable for school groups.
Well maintained gravel forest roads allow for easy bus and two-wheel drive access. It is located just 10 minutes from Gosford and the F3 Freeway, not far from the Reptile Park and Ourimbah exits.

The NSW National Parks site has extensive school excursion information and teacher resources.

If you are in Western Australia

WA Department of Education – this site has a list of approved ‘outdoor education’ excursion providers.

WA Parks and Wildlife – has specific information about visiting WA parks.

Nearer to Nature Schools @ Forest Heritage Centre at Dwellingup.  To contact the FHC email admin@forestdiscoverycentre.com.au.

If you are in Victoria

A great hands on resource is the Forest Classroom located at the Ferntree Gully Picnic Ground, Dandenong Ranges.

Parks Victoria Education Centre has all the state forest locations.

If you are in Queensland

The Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing has a list of parks that you can search.

Queensland Department of Education has a list of outdoor education centres.

If you are in the Australian Capital Territory

The Canberra 100 organisation has a great interactive ‘City of Trees’ excursion activity.

See what’s available at the ACT Parks just chose the park you would like to attend.

Or if you want to visit Tidbinbilla or Namadgi or the Canberra Nature Parks (that have 33 separate woodlands listed).

If you live in the Northern Territory

The best resource seems to be the NT Parks and Wildlife service.

School activities – this national school activities directory is a search engine that lists many excursions featuring forests as well as informative editorial articles on planning excursions, camps, field trips and travel.
