Agroforestry – The Ryan’s Farm: Queensland Silvopasture | Trees + Cattle

Lesson Overview:

Did you know that farmers who produce the vegetables, fruit, grain, fibre, milk, and meat that we use and eat every day can also grow trees that are used to make paper, packaging, furniture, and even buildings? The combination of growing trees with other crops or livestock is known as agroforestry and the industry is quickly growing – pardon the pun.

Come with us in this 360-degree video to the Ryan Farm in Cedar Pocket South East Queensland where we’ll meet Sean Ryan. Sean and his family graze livestock through stands and plantations of native forest comprising spotted gum and ironbark trees – an agroforestry system called silvopasture.

The trees act as a nutrient pump for the soil, provide a cool, and shady environment for livestock and they also provide the Ryan’s with a sustainable and renewable timber crop that is harvested and sold. Planting trees has also attracted the native wildlife back into their farming landscape.

Join us in 360-degrees – and while you’re there don’t forget to use your mouse, magic window, or VR Headset to look up and down and all around you!

Are you ready? LET’S GO!
