Ferny Grove SHS branches out on forestry field tour!
Courney Bailey, Agriculture Science Teacher at Ferny Grove SHS in Brisbane joined with the ForestLearning manager Beth Welden and 42 other members of the forestry and sustinable timber industry to tour major forestry and wood product facilities near Brisbane as a part of Timber Queensland's state conference on Wednesday 18 April.
As a part of the field tour, Courtney and attendees were given tours and science research presentations at the following destinations:
- QDAF Salisbury Research Facility (and the many and varied solid applications and oportunities for STEM contexts!) including the 100th year anniversary celebration and overview of history and current work at the facility as well as presentations outlining farm forestry network,
- Ravensbourne Private Native Forest with Private Forestry Service Queensland (with further applications for Agroforestry, Agriculture and land managment, Geography and Science).
Mick Stephens, Chief Executive of Timber Queensland said of Courtney's attendence on their conference tour "We were very pleased to host Courtney on the day who already has solid experience in agriculture and showed tremendous interest in the forest and timber industry. We look forward to assisting in showcasing the industry to Courtney and other teachers into the future”.
A direct outcome of the tour included Sean Ryan from Private Forestry Services Queensland, will be working with ForestLearning and Courtney from Ferny Grove SHS to incorporate sustainable native forestry tools and outdoor forestry management experiences into Ferny Grove's Agricultural Practices units for their year 9 students.
Certainly not on the tour program, but an experience nonetheless, was the rain affected road conditions that prevented the bus from climbing the hill to HQ Plantations at Beerburrum. We will be visiting HQ Plantations southern pine plantation at Beerburrum at another time and for anyone interested in joining us, please contact Beth at email@example.com
